Summer Research Grants

The GSO Summer Research Grant awards $500 to 5 University of Pittsburgh Graduate Students in the school of Arts and Sciences to supplement summer research through reimbursement. These funds can be used towards travel, lodging, conference attendance, costs of writing, research activities, preparing a dissertation (such as image feeds or media preparation), workshops, performance-related costs, and equipment or services needed for research. Reimbursements through the University are limited to expenses for which the student can supply receipts within thirty days of purchase. The funds cannot be used to purchase gift cards or compensate research participants through other means.

A committee of GSO delegates from various departments reviews the applications. The
application must include:

  1. An overview of the proposed project, no more than 500 words in length. This proposal must be appropriate for a broad audience. Please avoid the use of field-specific jargon that will hinder the committee’s ability to assess your proposal. The proposal must address the significance of research within the field.
  2. A current CV (2 pages maximum)
  3. A funding statement of no more than 500 words in length, explaining why the proposed award would aid in the student’s research and publication. This statement should include other awards applied for and their respective amounts as well as demonstrate need for additional funding.
  4. A proposed budget with line-item expenditures. Please mention in your budget application any costs funded by other grants and awards.
  5. A schedule of travel plans, if applicable.

Please also highlight if you can conduct your research with less than the designated award amount of the Summer Research Grant. This will help us to support more applicants or even support an additional student in special cases. The grant applications will be scored based on clarity of proposed project, feasibility of methodology and travel plans, context and significance of the research question within the applicant’s field, and personal impact on the development of the applicant in their career or degree goals. Clarity will be assessed as the applicant’s ability to convey the significance of their proposal to a broad audience, avoiding jargon and contextualizing discipline specific concepts. Feasibility will be assessed as the likelihood of the student completing the proposed research, travel, or other activities within the time of their degree program.
